WeChat Message #5: AP Score Cancellation vs. Withholding for 11th Graders

Dear Parents,

Our 11th graders are preparing for college apps next year! Here’s a quick guide on managing low AP scores to boost their profiles: cancel or withhold?

AP Score Cancellation (Free)

  • What it does: Permanently deletes a score; colleges never see it.
  • When to use: Best for a low score (1 or 2) your child won’t need (e.g., retaking later).
  • Example: If Amy expects a 1 in AP Chemistry, cancelling keeps it off her record for schools like Stanford.
  • Details: Cancel Scores

AP Score Withholding ($10/score/college)

  • What it does: Hides a score from specific colleges but keeps it for later use.
  • When to use: Great for flexibility—hide a low score from selective schools but keep it for credit elsewhere.
  • Example: If Ben gets a 2 in AP History, he can withhold it from UCLA but send it to a state school.
  • Details: Withhold Scores

College App Tips

Dear Parents, you’re an amazing group, and I’m thrilled to share my take on making our kids’ college applications stand out!

Why it matters: Most colleges allow self-reporting of AP scores on applications, with official reports sent only to the enrolled college. Cancellation or withholding matters only if your child listed score recipients during the exam or is applying to schools like NYU with flexible testing policies.

My Recommendation (My Top Strategy!): For UC schools, report scores of 3 or higher (except UCLA and UC Berkeley, which expect 4s and 5s). For top 30 colleges (e.g., Ivy League, Stanford), report only 4s and 5s. Why? High scores prove academic rigor, meeting the elite standards of top-tier admissions, while UCs may accept 3s for credit but demand stronger scores for competitive campuses. This strategy showcases our kids’ brilliance!

My Advice: Don’t list score recipients during exams to maintain control. Self-report only high scores to polish your child’s application. Submit cancellation/withholding forms by June 15 (before July score release) to block unwanted scores. Plan ahead to give our kids the edge!

Choose: Cancel for scores you’ll never need; withhold for flexibility. Let’s help our kids shine! Questions? Share in the group! 😊
